We need a Wendy Davis in North Carolina

With the win of the governership by Pat McCrory, North Carolina has experienced a mind-blowing list of regressive changes that leave the most vulnerable citizens at risk. McCrory has engaged in cronyism and instead of promoting job creation, he has encouraged unconstitutional anti-voting measures, severly restricted women's healthcare choices, and has passed regressive public education financing, among other negative legislative moves. In light of these destructive legislative developments, many North Carolinians would like to know where the Democrats in Raleigh have been hiding. Why haven't we seen an elected North Carolina Democrat refusing to sit still for these draconian measures? Who is fighting for the people of this state?

During the 2008 presidential election, many people across the country described North Carolina as a state that was "turning blue", meaning that its citizens were increasingly voting Democrat. But with the backlash, arguably fueled by racism and fear, the Republicans gathered support, organized incredibly well, and fundraised their way to a complete take-over of both the House and Senate of the State Government in 2012. But with the passage of such controversial bills, McCrory's ratings have dropped considerably.

Meanwhile, North Carolina's elected Democrats have been strangely silent. The public has not seen the brave actions that Texas has seen with Wendy Davis. North Carolinians need to see that our elected officials are willing to stand up and fight for us: average citizens, not the wealthiest 1% and large corporations, but the teachers, firefighters, police officers, social workers, painters, bank tellers, as well as the unemployed and under-employed, the working poor, the elderly, our children, the shrinking middle class---the ones who have made the sacrifices and are continually asked to make more sacrifices, while the wealthiest continue to be granted tax breaks and loopholes.

So we call on our Democrat officials in Raleigh to stop being so silent, stop playing it safe, and do what we hired you to do!! Stand up for The People! We are hurting! We need you!!

  1. Spot on! We all need a Wendy Davis to champion those who have become disenfranchised.
